Ultrasound Preparation

Please follow these instructions prior to your examination:

Abdominal Ultrasound

Have nothing to eat or drink after 10pm the night before.

Abdominal and Pelvic Ultrasound

Have nothing to eat or drink after 10pm the night before.

For this exam, your bladder must be full. To fill your bladder, drink four large glasses (32 oz.) of water (no carbonated beverages or milk products) at least two hours prior to the appointment and do not go to the washroom.

Pelvic and Obstetric Ultrasounds

For two hours prior to the examination, you should not empty your bladder. To fill your bladder, drink four large glasses (32 oz.) of water (no carbonated beverages or milk products) at least two hours prior to the appointment and do not go to the washroom.

Patients 18 weeks and over in their pregnancy should drink two glasses of water two hours before the appointment. Do not go to the washroom.

Kidney Ultrasound

Two hours prior to the examination, drink two large glasses (16 oz.) of water and do not go to the washroom. Do not eat anything for two hours prior to the appointment.

Thyroid Ultrasound

No preparation needed.

Breast Biopsy

Do not wear deodorant.

Wear a loose-fitting, comfortable top and a comfortable, supportive bra.

Core biopsy patients should not take aspirin or ibuprofen for 7 – 10 days prior to the procedure. Tylenol is recommended for pain.
